During the teenage years, many faith traditions focus on “confirmation” learning. Affirm is our version of that. A meaningful faith grows through a multitude of activities, relationships and experiences, and so students are encouraged to participate in the faith community in multiple ways. Affirm is about modeling conversations and thought processes we hope students carry with them into adulthood.
We anchor Affirm in discussion series’ focused on the promises we say together in baptism. We learn about the stories and practices that affirm and encourage us in who we are as people of God and encourage one another to think about why that matters. Each series is 3 weeks long, and most frequently happens during youth group at scheduled times throughout the year. Everyone is invited to participate in these discussions beginning in 7th grade.
Along with participating in Affirm discussions, students have additional opportunities to engage their faith through worship, service and reflection.
In 10th grade, we help students pull it all together. Students who have participated in three Affirm discussion series’, service projects or trips, and worship are affirmed and encouraged in a special worship celebration with the Sanctuary community.
